O God, through the work of Saint Frances Cabrini
You brought comfort and love to the immigrants
and those in need. May her example and work
be continued in the lives of those dedicated to You.

Frances was born in Italy, one of 13 children. As a child, she dreamed about being a missionary to China. While teaching, a priest asked her to help out in a small home for orphans. She did so gladly, and became a nun. She started a congregation of missionary nuns, called the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
Although her heart was set on going to China, Pope Leo XIII asked her to go to America to do her missionary work, and she sailed for the United States and became an American citizen. She helped Italian immigrants and was like their real mother and friend. Mother Cabrini, as she was called, opened schools, hospitals, and homes for children in various States. She founded 67 institutions, and she put all her trust in the Sacred Heart. "It is He who is doing everything, not us," she said. Mother Cabrini died in Chicago in 1917.
